South Point Sales Again Exceeds Keeneland September Clearance Rate; $475,000 Empire Maker Colt Headlines

A full 81% of the South Point Sales yearlings offered throughout the Keeneland September sale found new homes, much higher than the overall sale rate of 75%. South Point Sales has now exceeded the September Sale clearance rate in three of the past five years.

A colt by the Gainesway Farm stallion Empire Maker was the South Point sale topper at $475,000, with several others exceeding six-figure bids.

Offered in the fifth session as Hip #1026, the colt is out of the graded stakes-winning Tapit daughter Touching Beauty, already the dam of a blacktype runner. Northway Bloodstock signed the ticket.

The colt is one of the quintet South Point yearlings to bring six figures during the session. The others:

$225,000
Hip #1243, a colt by Runhappy

$130,000
Hip #1142, a filly by Nyquist

$105,000
Hip $1181, a colt by Exaggerator

$100,000
Hip #1069, a colt by Hard Spun

There were numerous other six figure yearlings sold by South Point in later sessions including some post-sale.

Hip #1950, a colt by First Samurai in session 7, is a perfect example of Mike Recio’s relentless search for buyers. After leaving the ring unsold, Mike negotiate a $100,000 price with one of the bidders, making the colt the highest-priced First Samurai yearling of 2019.
