Mike Recio’s Rockbridge Bloodstock is well-known for making astute breeding stock purchases. The latest example is Glory Gold, a mare by Medaglia d’Oro, purchased by Rockbridge Bloodstock on behalf of Final Furlong Racing at the 2018 November Breeding Stock sale.
Her $14,000 purchase price was an exceptional value at the time for a half-sister to a pair of blacktype winners and a daughter of one of the world’s top stallions. That price now represents a tremendous bargain after Glory Gold’s fourth foal, Espresso Shot, has emerged as a contender for the 2019 Kentucky Oaks with her victory in the March 9 Busher Stakes. The win added $144,000 to her career bankroll while also earning her 50 points toward a berth in the Kentucky Oaks starting gate.
Espresso Shot cleared her Maiden condition with a 2 1/2-length triumph over fellow New York-breds in mid-September, a victory that was noted by Recio when he went shopping for broodmare prospects in November. Espresso Shot’s form improved dramatically after Glory Gold was secured, finishing second in the November 23 Key Cents Stakes and rolling to a 3 1/2-length score in the East View Stakes on December 29.
Making her first start of 2019 in the Busher, Espresso Shot overcame a bumping incident out of the gate and an extremely wide trip throughout the contest before prevailing by 3/4 lengths over Graded Stakes winner Oxy Lady.
