A pair of South Point Sales yearling graduates scored sharp victories in Louisiana and Southern California over the second weekend of February.
Sharp Witted kicked off the big weekend with a debut Maiden Special victory going 6.5 furlongs at Delta Downs on February 9. Favored over nine rivals to graduate at first asking, the Jimmy Creed colt relaxed off the early pace before commencing a 4-wide move around the far turn. He sustained his closing momentum down the lane and hit the wire 1 1/2 lengths in from the 5-1 shot Shae’s Day.
Sharp Witted was purchased for $62,000 at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling auction.
The following afternoon at Santa Anita, another South Point 2017 September sale grad, Stubbins, made it two in a row with a determined victory under the San Gabriel mountains.
A colt by Morning Line, Stubbins has shown high promise from the beginning. He debuted with a third-place run in a salty Maiden Special contest at Del Mar on August 4 and returned later in the meeting to run second to the highly touted Tale of the Union. Both of those races were dirt sprints.
Switched to turf and turned loose on Santa Anita’s downhill turf course, Stubbins broke through with a Maiden Special victory on January 5. Back at the same course and distance in his first outing versus winners on February 10, the Doug O’Neill pupil was up to the task, prevailing by a brave neck under Rafael Bejarano.
Stubbins was bred in Kentucky by Patrick and Brittney Durtschi with assistance from Mike Recio’s Rockbridge Bloodstock.
